With field trip to CASE Construction, THS students gain hands-on experience with heavy equipment

TOMAHAWK – Students in Tomahawk High School (THS)’s Building Trades program recently swapped their hammers and tape measures for joysticks and heavy machinery in a field trip to CASE Construction Equipment.

According to Instructor Andy Peissig, the field trip was more than just a tour.

“It was a full-throttle experience designed to promote careers in heavy equipment operation and the skilled trades,” Peissig said.

Peissig explained that at the state-of-the-art CASE facility, THS 12th graders got a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the machinery that shapes our world.

The highlight of the day, Peissig noted, was stepping into the operator’s seat.

Under the careful supervision of CASE professionals, every student had the opportunity to operate a range of construction vehicles, such as bulldozers, backhoes, mini-excavators and tractor loaders.

“For many students, it was the first time they truly understood the scale and sophistication of modern construction equipment,” Peissig stated.

The field trip was strategically planned to do more than just provide a fun day out, according to Peissig.

“It was a direct response to the growing need for skilled tradespeople, particularly in heavy equipment operation,” he said. “CASE instructors emphasized that operating these machines requires a blend of technical skill, the industry, attention to safety and career pathways.”

THS’s Building Trades program aims to give students practical, meaningful exposure to all facets of the construction industry, Peissig said, adding that teaming up with CASE Construction “proved to be an invaluable piece of that mission.”

“Our students left with a newfound respect for the operators who build our infrastructure and a clear understanding that a rewarding, high-tech career in the trades is well within their reach,” Peissig stated. “We extend our sincere thanks to the team at CASE Construction Equipment for partnering with us and investing in the future of our local workforce.”
