TOMAHAWK – Two Tomahawk Middle School (TMS) teachers were recently awarded grants from the Wisconsin Retired Educator’s Association (WREA) Foundation.

WREA awarded a total of eight Grants for Innovation to Wisconsin middle schools as part of the organization’s annual “Challenge Award Program.”

The WREA Foundation Challenge Awards are given annually on a rotating basis from elementary schools, then to middle schools, and finally to high schools. The program is designed to recognize and encourage innovation at all levels of public schools.

The grant recipients were announced at WREA’s yearly Spring Regional event.

TMS seventh grade social studies and WIN teacher Toni Tourdot’s “Calming Creativity” project earned first place in WREA Region 1.

A release from the Lincoln County Retired Educators (LCRE) explained that the project exposes students to different arts and crafts to enhance social skills, creativity and reasoning.

“The goal is to increase student creativity, self-reliance and mental well-being,” LCRE said.

Tourdot’s $2,000 award will go towards expanding the length of the program and the number of participants.

A $250 grant for second place in Region 1 went to TMS eighth grade English and language arts teacher Suzanne Coleman for her “8th Grade D.C. Learning” field trip project.

LCRE explained that through the field trip, students have the opportunity travel to Washington, D.C. and New York City to experience a look at the nation’s capital and a very large city.

Coleman’s award will be used to support a scholarship for a student to participate in the trip.
