Tomahawk Public Library offering free access to digitized Leader archive

Posted

TOMAHAWK – Those looking for a Tomahawk Leader article or issue from the past can now do so with ease – and at no cost – at the Tomahawk Public Library (TPL).

During the City of Tomahawk Common Council meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 4, TPL Director Heather O’Hare said the library is now offering a digitized version of the Tomahawk Leader archive, dating back more than 130 years.

O’Hare explained that TPL for several years had been looking into digitizing its collection of newspapers, housed on microfilm. Previous estimates for the digitization project ranged from $20,000.00 to $40,000.00, O’Hare said.

Through a partnership with www.newspapers.com, a subdivision of www.ancestry.com, TPL was able to have its archive of Tomahawk Leader newspapers digitized for a total cost of $600.00.

O’Hare noted that in order to gain full access to the archive, which dates back to the 1890s and goes up to 2016, a subscription with Ancestry is typically required. However, the public can access the full collection of newspapers at TPL for free.

The website offers the ability to search for keywords, names, dates and locations within its collection of more than 1.1 billion newspaper pages.

O’Hare said library staff would continue to receive training on utilizing the archive.

The Tomahawk Public Library is located at 300 W. Lincoln Ave., Tomahawk.
