ONEIDA COUNTY – The Oneida County Health Department (OCHD) recently shared information on respiratory viruses.
“As cooler weather moves in, many viruses begin to spread more easily,” OCHD said in a release. “OCHD reminds residents that several respiratory viruses – like the flu, COVID-19, RSV and the common cold – can cause similar symptoms. However, they are caused by different germs and can affect people in different ways.”
OCHD explained that in general, the flu, COVID-19 and RSV can make people feel sicker than a common cold.
“Colds usually cause a runny or stuffy nose, while serious problems, such as pneumonia or hospitalization, are uncommon,” OCHD said. “The flu, COVID-19 and RSV can lead to more serious illness, especially in young children, older adults and people with certain health conditions.”
OCHD said getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to prevent serious illness.
Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available at OCHD, 100 W. Keenan St., Rhinelander. Walk-in hours are held on Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments are not necessary.
RSV and pneumococcal vaccines are available at OCHD by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call 715-369-6111.
“Together, we can help keep our community healthy this fall and winter,” OCHD said.
