TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Regional Chamber of Commerce last week announced that it contributed $5,000 to a project that produced a documentary film focused on the history of Tomahawk.
The Chamber made the contribution ahead of the film’s release last month.
A release from the Chamber said the funds were awarded during the final round of the Chamber’s room tax grant program before its discontinuation.
The Chamber explained that its room tax grant program was established to support local nonprofit organizations and projects that contribute to tourism development and promotion throughout the Tomahawk area. The program focused on initiatives that attract visitors, enhance the visitor experience and encourage overnight stays and longer visits, benefiting local businesses and the regional economy, according to the Chamber.
“While the grant program has since been discontinued, the Chamber recognizes the value of investing in projects that strengthen the community, preserve its heritage and showcase what makes the Tomahawk area a special place to live and visit,” the Chamber stated, noting that it hopes to explore opportunities to bring grant funding back in the future as resources and organizational priorities allow.
The Chamber’s contribution “supports the preservation and promotion of Tomahawk’s rich history through Tomahawk: City in the Pines, a feature-length documentary exploring the people, industries and defining moments that shaped the community,” the release said.
Tomahawk: City in the Pines, directed by Los Angeles, Calif.-based, Academy Award-winning director John Newcombe and produced by Tomahawk native Clay Schmit, debuted at the School District of Tomahawk auditorium in September after about two years of production.
The Chamber said the film “brings the area’s history to life through historical photographs, interviews, archival research and contemporary cinematography.”
“Preserving our history is an important part of telling the story of who we are as a community,” said Chamber Executive Director Charis Lau. “Projects like Tomahawk: City in the Pines help residents reconnect with our roots while giving visitors a deeper appreciation for the people, industries and traditions that built Tomahawk. We are proud to have supported this project and its lasting value to our community.”
The public can watch Tomahawk: City in the Pines online through Kinema for $4.99 at www.tinyurl.com/97merz67.
Looking ahead, the Chamber said it encourages residents to stay tuned for updates on a future feature film project being explored in coordination with other local entities.
“Continued collaboration and storytelling will help share Tomahawk’s unique character, history, and community spirit with audiences near and far,” the Chamber stated.
