“Weather Wreaks Havoc on Fishing!”

My report covers the last week of August through the middle of September.  Clients and I met during the morning hours for crappie and walleye fishing.  Weather conditions were sun to clouds with another cold front approaching early; this was one of several for the week!  Air temperatures were 54-70 degrees and water temps were 64-66 degrees with southwest to west northwest winds at 10-15 mph.  This water temperature can be expected after air temperatures below normal over the last couple of weeks.

In the morning we cast soft plastics in and along channel areas.  Fish were marked but no bites.  Shallow areas were fished before the morning rain that started way too soon.  Fishing was pretty active in the short time and the boys landed some crappies.  Fantastic!  We had a small window for walleye, catching nice keepers and releasing a few sub-legals.  Once the rain started, lots of short bites; as the rain set in, it was time to go as the fish shut down completely!  During the afternoon, we went out again; this time we had plenty of sunshine, but it was breezy.  Northern pike were the first fish caught, as we fished the weeds.  Mid afternoon best bites were fishing healthy weeds in places not directly in the pounding wind.  Ryan got us going with walleye, pike, and beautiful crappie!  His dad Jason landed the biggest slab at 13 ¾”!  Congratulations to Jason and Ryan!  We had a great day on the water!

During the beginning of September, my son Isaac and I went out scouting for fish.  Conditions were sun and clouds, with light north winds and temperatures in the 60’s.  I cast out soft plastics and Isaac used his new birthday spinner.  We got bites pretty much everywhere we tried.  The action was decent.  Slab crappies were caught and released, as well as jumbo perch and medium pike.  No walleye today and we had a good couple hours of fishing.

That weekend a friend and I went out fishing in the afternoon.  Weather was overcast and cool.  We tossed out cranks and plastics, fishing the weed edges.  The best spots to fish were out of the wind.  Fishing was slow with October-like weather, but we caught largemouth bass, slab crappie, walleyes, and pike.  Not bad for poor conditions!

This past week I went out to check out the bite situation.  Weather was overcast with drizzle to light rain and southwest to west winds.  Right off the bat I had nice crappies chewing on the rubber.  Some were easy to catch and others were short biters.  I also got into a nice mixed bag of fish, catching jumbo perch, walleye, and northern pike.  Not a bad outing of catch and release fishing.

This upcoming week sounds like Indian summer may be starting!  This is a good time to get some fishing in!  Good luck fishermen!
