VFW hosts 10th annual Musky Tournament on Lake Mohawksin

Posted

TOMAHAWK – On Saturday, July 11, VFW Post 2687 in Tomahawk held its 10th annual Musky Tournament on Lake Mohawksin.

In all, there were nine qualifying fish caught.

Organizer Paul Wurl explained that the tournament is scored by the longest fish for first, second longest for second, and so forth.

“We do not go by total length for placement, because we believe that if a boat catches one large fish, and another boat catches two qualifying fish, 35 inches minimum for qualifying, that it takes away from the significance of the larger catch,” Wurl said.

Both first and second place both caught two qualifying muskies each, but even if they hadn't, the placement would have remained the same, Wurl noted.

“We are not following the standard tournaments that are organized for muskellunge,” he stated. “We are discussing the possibility of adding a side, winner takes all, largest non-musky caught bracket. I was told by multiple fishermen that they caught large northern pike while attempting to catch musky.”

Earning first place in this year’s tournament with a 48 ¾-inch musky were Lucas Schoone and Trevor Myers. Schoone and Myers also caught a second fish measuring 35 ¼ inches.

Sam Iverson and Tera Dassow placed second with a 41 ½-inch fish. A second musky measuring 36 3/8 inches was also caught by Iverson and Dassow.

Placing third with a 39 5/8-inch fish were Eric and Danny Piel.

Travis and Amanda Bartz and James Reilly and Aaron Wanta tied for fourth and fifth places with a 39 ¼-inch musky each.

Other fish that were caught were as follows: 37 ½ inches, caught by Michael and Chantalle Palke; 35 ½ inches and 31 ¾ inches, caught by Jack Schall and Mike Callender; 34 ¾ inches, caught by Travis and Amanda Bartz; 34 inches, caught by Nick Starr and Doland Sheahan; 32 ¼ inches, caught by Christopher Wazniak and Kasen Sperle; and 28 ¾ inches, caught by Justin and Leah Norenberg.

The Post thanked the tournament organizers for their hard work, the tournament participants and the numerous sponsors of the event.

“VFW Post 2687 is honored to be a part of such an amazing community,” the Post said.
