For the Tomahawk Leader
TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Police Department (TPD) on Monday, March 15 announced the passing of its first K9 officer Vali.
Vali, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, died due to “a medical complication she suffered on March 13, 2021,” the department said in a post on its Facebook page.
Vali was a dual-purpose K9 who joined her handler and partner Officer Tom Tollefson in 2013. She was used for narcotics detection and tracking. During her time of service, she assisted Officer Tollefson in the seizure of thousands of dollars worth of illegal narcotics and US currency, along with making a multitude of arrests.
“Vali was retired from service in November of 2020 and was living her final days playing fetch and going for long walks,” TPD said. “She was a loyal companion and partner to Officer Tollefson.”
Dr. Julie Germano of Tomahawk Animal Clinic had assisted Vali from her arrival in Tomahawk “until her last day.”
“We are grateful to Dr. Germano and the staff and vendors for providing for Vali,” TPD stated.
The department said those wishing to honor Vali may make a donation to TPD’s K9 fund.
“Rest easy Vali,” TPD said. “We have it from here.”
