RHINELANDER – The Tomahawk High School boys’ swim team set 23 personal records at the Great Northern Conference (GNC) meet in Rhinelander on Friday, Feb. 7.
Rhinelander set eight new conference records in their 463-point win. Tomahawk finished second with 235 points, while Shawano/Seymour (Div. I) rounded out the top three with 168 points.
All three Hatchet relays finished second, to secure silver medals. Members of those teams were Sam Zastrow, Jack Amelse, Zach Germano, Connor Germano, Dane DeKiep and Bruce Peetz.
Every single Tomahawk swimmer had a personal best, with Zach Germano dropping four seconds in his second-place finish in the breaststroke.
Both of the Hatchets’ 400 free relays made the podium, while the 200 medley relay just missed the school record by .41 seconds.
Coach Theresa L’Esperance noted that the boys are “planning on breaking that record next week.”
Several new swimmers also contributed to the scoring. Nathan Rosenmeier showed his prowess in the 100 breaststroke, and Brock Fischer also reduced his 500 time significantly.
“Michael Lucus is new to swimming, and he revealed that swimming is quite fun,” L’Esperance stated.
