Tomahawk Pharmacy receives USDA grant to install solar electric array

TOMAHAWK – A Tomahawk business will receive federal grant funding to help improve its energy efficiency.

On Thursday, June 13, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced more than $27 million in USDA Rural Development Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) investments bolstering 15 rural Wisconsin businesses’ efforts to adapt or expand clean energy use.

Among the recipients of funding is Tomahawk Pharmacy LLC, located at 315 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Tomahawk.

A release from USDA said $33,932.00 will be allocated to the downtown business. The funds will be used install a small solar electric array, which is expected to save $3,954.00 per year.

The array will replace 33,466 kilowatt hours – 100% of the company’s energy use, according to USDA.

Tomahawk Pharmacy is the latest local business to receive REAP dollars. Funding has also been distributed to Daigle Brothers Inc., Foley’s Forest Products LLC and Northwoods Community Realty LLC this year. In 2023, Tomahawk Terminal Company LLC and Sunset Acres LLC each received funding through the program.

In Wisconsin, since 2021, USDA has announced more than $20.7 million through REAP in 196 renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements that will help rural business owners’ lower energy costs, generate new income and strengthen their resiliency of operations.

USDA said it will accept REAP applications through Monday, Sept. 30. Funding includes a dedicated set-aside for underutilized renewable energy technologies.
