TOMAHAWK – School District of Tomahawk students in grades 4 through 8 recently competed in classroom spelling bees as part of the Scripps National Selling Bee.

The top spellers in each classroom went on to compete in the school bee on Tuesday, Jan. 28 in the district auditorium.

Angela McPherson, School Bee Coordinator and District Reading Specialist, said as part of the Tomahawk bee, students went “above and beyond the usual academic challenges” and “exhibited impressive spelling skills.”

The middle school bee went on for 24 rounds, while the elementary school bee was completed in 19, McPherson noted.

Jayda DeVillers, a sixth grader, was the champion of the middle school bee, with 8th graders Matilda VanAsten and Sam Ford rounding out the top three.

In the elementary school bee, Leah Davids took the top spot. Lily Young finished in second place, followed by William Wendorf in third. All three students are in fourth grade.

“All six of these hyperlexic kids will compete in Three Lakes on Thursday, Feb. 13 at the regional spelling bee,” McPherson stated.
