TOMAHAWK – Twenty-one years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C., the Tomahawk community will carry on its tradition of honoring the victims and the responding emergency personnel.

Tomahawk’s first commemorative program was held in 2002 on the one-year anniversary of the attacks, and ceremonies have been held each year since.

This year’s Patriot Day ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Tomahawk on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Members of the Tomahawk and Nokomis fire departments and the Tomahawk Police Department, along with EMS and military personnel, will be on hand for the program, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the posting of colors by the Tomahawk Area Veterans Honor Guard. Pastor Larry Mathein of the Little Rice Fire Department will perform the invocation, and several members of local EMS departments will speak.

The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony. Organizer Bill Burcalow noted that he and others involved in the program are hoping for a good turnout from the community.
