St. Mary’s Choir and Friends set to present annual concert

TOMAHAWK – St. Mary's Choir and Friends are preparing to present their annual concert next month.

The concert will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 320 E. Washington Ave., Tomahawk, on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m.

Jan Huseby, St. Mary’s Director of Music and Liturgy, said a group of 65 musicians comprised of adults, youth and six instrumentalists will perform a variety of seasonal and inspirational songs, in addition to a cantata called “Glory to the Newborn King.”

“A special element in the program will be a dedication and tribute song to those from our community who are serving in the military,” Huseby stated.

Preparations for the yearly concerts begin six months before performances, in early summer, when Huseby browses hundreds of musical options until the concert repertoire is set in place. Rehearsals begin the day after Labor Day and continue weekly until the performance.

Huseby noted that the robust schedule “demands a strong commitment, which the choir eagerly provides.”

“The ultimate joy and satisfaction is performing the music to a full audience, but the growth of the choir through the season is also deeply gratifying,” she said. “Relationships and new friendships are formed, and old friends reunite annually to share their love of music. The choir truly is ‘homegrown,’ and some of the most delightful surprises happen when the least likely person reveals that they have a phenomenal singing voice.”

Choir members’ musical experience varies from “Happy Birthday singers” to “proficient,” Huseby said, adding that accommodations are made to enable everyone to learn the music.

“Spiritual connections are also formed as singers bond through mutual support in unforeseen challenges,” she stated.

The singers and musicians represent nine various church communities. Huseby noted that some drive a considerable distance each week to rehearsals.

Assisted by Mary Ramsey in the conducting and accompaniment roles, Huseby is in her 25th season as musical director.

The concert is free to attend, but free-will offerings to help defray expenses are appreciated. The doors will open at 3 p.m. on the day of the performance, with prelude music provided by Mary Ament and Gina Karl on the harp and flute. A reception featuring hor d'oeuvres and desserts will follow the concert.

“Everyone is cordially invited to celebrate the beautiful spirit of the Christmas season,” Huseby stated.
