SHAWANO – On Friday, Feb. 21, several Tomahawk High School girls’ wrestlers traveled to Shawano to compete in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Sectional Tournament.
Six Tomahawk athletes were vying for a chance to qualify for the State Wrestling Tournament. To earn a spot at State, competitors had to place in the top two of their weight class, and each wrestler had to secure a win in their first round to continue in the competition.
At 100 lbs., Abbie Rosenmeier fought hard but was unable to win her opening match, ending her tournament run early. Kylie Peissig had a strong performance at 107 lbs., winning her first two matches and advancing to the finals. Despite a valiant effort, Peissig lost in the championship bout and was unable to secure a victory in the wrestle back, ultimately finishing in 3rd place.
Cadence Thompson competed at 114 lbs., but was also eliminated after a tough loss in her first match. Elise Gibeault, wrestling at 120 lbs., also lost a heartbreaker in her first match, as did Alicia Voermens at 132 lbs., all falling short of advancing.
The Lady Hatchets had some success at 185 lbs. Kami Gabrich won her first match, showing grit and determination. Unfortunately, she was unable to maintain momentum, suffering losses in her next two matches, finishing in 4th place.
While none of the Lady Hatchets secured a spot at State, the team’s improvement throughout the year was a testament to the ladies’ hard work and determination, as well as the coaches' dedication to helping these young ladies reach their potential.
