One dead, two injured following motorcycle vs. car crash in Town of Scott

TOWN OF SCOTT – One person died and two others were injured following a motorcycle vs. car crash in Lincoln County this week.

According to a release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, June 18, at about 12:12 p.m., the Lincoln County 911 Center received a call reporting a car vs. motorcycle crash with injuries at the intersection of County Rd. K and County Rd. Q in the Town of Scott. Initial reports said one person was not breathing, while two others were involved in the incident.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found an orange Harley-Davidson motorcycle laying on its side in the middle of the intersection and a tan Dodge Caravan off the west side of the road, south of the intersection.

The Sheriff’s Office said preliminary investigation revealed that the van, being operated by Marlene Stoelting, 88, of Merrill, was traveling westbound on County Rd. Q and approaching the intersection with County Rd. K. The motorcycle, being operated by Robert Dungan, 55, of McAlester, Okla., was traveling northbound on County Rd. K and approaching the intersection with County Rd. Q.

The Sheriff’s Office said Stoelting stopped at the intersection and turned southbound on County Rd. K, in the path of the motorcycle.

“Not having enough time to react to the Caravan, the motorcycle struck it on the driver’s side, mid-vehicle,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Robert Dungan and the passenger on the motorcycle, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as his wife April Dungan, 47, also of McAlester, Okla., were thrown from the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries. They were transported by ground ambulance to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Robert Dungan was then flown to UW-Madison Hospital for advanced care, the release said.

On Friday, June 21, the Sheriff’s Office said Robert Dungan died from his injuries at UW-Madison hospital on Thursday, June 20. April Dungan was being treated at UW-Madison Hospital at the time of the release, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Stoelting was transported to Aspirus Merrill Hospital.

Stoelting told investigating deputies that she thought she had enough time to go in front of the motorcycle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Wisconsin State Patrol was called to conduct a reconstruction of the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Merrill Police Department and the Merrill Fire Department. 

The intersection of County Rd. K and County Rd. Q was closed for approximately two hours.
