Merrill man injured after being struck by car while hitchhiking on U.S. Hwy. 8

TOWN OF SOMO – A Merrill man was injured after being struck by a car while hitchhiking on U.S. Hwy. 8 in the Town of Somo late last month, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to a Tuesday, Oct. 31 release from the Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, Oct. 28, at approximately 7:09 p.m., the Lincoln County Telecommunications Center received a report of a male hitchhiking in the area of U.S. Hwy. 8 and Meyer Rd. The initial report said the man was wearing all black clothing and was walking eastbound on the fog line of the roadway.

Upon arriving at U.S. Hwy. 8 and Honey Rd., a deputy located a Merrill man, 24, lying on the roadway with serious injuries caused by an apparent vehicle strike. The victim was taken by ambulance to Tomahawk Aspirus Hospital.

Deputies identified the driver of the vehicle as being a Tomahawk man, 51.

The Sheriff’s Office said the incident was not a hit and run.

The names of those involved had not been released by the Sheriff’s Office as of press time on Monday, Nov. 6.

The Wisconsin State Patrol Reconstruction Unit was requested to the scene for further investigation. U.S. Hwy. 8 was closed from County Rd. CC to County Rd. T to allow for an investigation to be conducted.

Following the reconstruction and the crash investigation, the driver and the scene were released, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Tomahawk EMS and Little Rice First Responders.

Further investigation is being conducted into the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

On 10/28/2023 at approximately 18:30 Lincoln County Dispatch was notified over the radio about a crash injury in the area of U.S. Hwy. 8 and Meyer Rd. in the Township of Somo. The Lincoln County Deputy on scene advised a Merrill man, 24, had been struck by a car. Tomahawk EMS was paged to the scene and transported the patient to Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital. Nothing further at this time.
