LWVNOW to host community conversations focused on America’s founding

Pair of events will be held at Tomahawk Public Library

TOMAHAWK – As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, the Tomahawk Public Library is partnering with the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods (LWVNOW) to host two community conversations exploring the nation’s founding and its lasting impact.

The discussions will take place at the Tomahawk Public Library, 300 W. Lincoln Ave., Tomahawk, on Wednesday, May 7; and Wednesday, May 21, at 12 p.m. each day.

The events are made possible by a PBS Wisconsin America@250 grant, according to a release from LWVNOW.

“America@250 Community Conversations are designed to help people connect and reflect on our shared history and the future of democracy,” PBS Wisconsin’s website says. “The goal of these structured, small-group discussions is to get to know others in your community, to listen to and consider their perspectives and reflect on how these align with or differ from your own. The mark of a successful Community Conversation is that all participants are engaged and sharing their thoughts and experiences.”

The conversations are inspired by The American Revolution, a six-part, 12-hour documentary series directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt.

“The series examines how 13 British colonies along the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion, secured independence and established a new form of government – reshaping the continent and influencing democratic movements around the world,” LWVNOW stated.

LWVNOW said community members are invited to “engage in thoughtful, locally-grounded discussions about the ideals, challenges and ongoing evolution of American democracy – particularly as they relate to Northwoods communities today.”

A limited number of seats are available. For more information or to reserve a spot, contact TPL at 715-453-2455 or copy@tomahawk.lib.wi.us.
