Tomahawk turned the ball over three times and the Raiders turned them into points on the scoreboard early in the game to get the 47-14 GNC win in Marathon Friday.
“This game was a tough pill to swallow for our entire football program because I thought we had a good week of preparation and that we were ready to play a physical football game against a quality conference opponent,” stated Hatchet head coach Sam Hernandez. “However, we continue to find ways to hurt ourselves which is not going to help us win games. We put the ball on the turf three times tonight, and each time Marathon recovered and was able to convert it into points.”
After falling behind big heading into the half, the coach said they talked with the team about how important it was to finish the game. And sophomore Logan Bishop and his teammates responded, as Bishop busted off a big run in the third quarter running 33-yards to pay dirt to get Tomahawk on the scoreboard. Bishop would add one more from four yards out and also bounced the two-point conversion to finish out scoring on the night.
The coach said Hatchet senior Tony Matti has been an anchor for the football team all season long, and on Friday he again stood out on both sides of the ball, clearly making the most of his senior season.
“After the game we talked about finishing the season strong, and finishing what we started. While this season has not gone the way we wanted to in terms of wins and losses, I am incredibly proud of their effort and attitude, and couldn’t think of a better group of young men.”
Bishop would lead the Hatchet ground game finishing with 82-yards and a pair of touchdowns on 13 carries.
The Hatchets will finish out the regular season this Friday, Oct. 18 as they host Edgar in their final game ever in the Marawood Conference. Friday is also Senior Night and Youth Night as the Hatchets honor their seniors: Cody Scholz, Cody Jablonski, Anthony Ierulli, Austin Snow, Zach Grigg and T. Matti. Youth football teams will be announced at halftime of the game.
