‘Light Up Christmas’: Tomahawk high schoolers, Main Street partner on project backed by STAR Foundation grant

TOMAHAWK – Through a grant from the Support Tomahawk Area Resources (STAR) Foundation, School District of Tomahawk students and Tomahawk Main Street Inc. teamed up on a project to bring some holiday spirit to downtown Tomahawk.

Instructor Brian Schiltz explained that the “Light Up Christmas” project is a collaborative partnership with Main Street to enhance areas of Tomahawk and promote community holiday spirit through the STAR Foundation grant.

The STAR Foundation acts as a community chest for Tomahawk area businesses and individuals by making charitable grants to community groups, clubs and non-profit organizations that contribute to the health and vitality of the area.

“Several decorative trees were fabricated the previous year, and additional pieces were completed using materials purchased by the district this current year,” Schiltz said. “The decorations were well-received by the community. Therefore, the future of this program is to continue as an ongoing partnership that provides both community beautification and authentic, project-based learning opportunities for metals students.”

Moving forward, decorations will be designed and fabricated annually as part of the curriculum, allowing each new group of students to contribute to the project, Schiltz noted.

“This program provided meaningful benefits to the community by enhancing public spaces with student-fabricated holiday decorations that contributed to a welcoming and festive downtown atmosphere,” Schiltz stated. “It strengthened community pride by showcasing the talent and craftsmanship of local students while reinforcing positive partnerships between the school district and community organizations. In addition, the project provided students with authentic, hands-on learning experiences in design and fabrication, allowing them to apply technical skills in a real-world setting that directly served and benefited the broader community.”
