LCHD offering free carbon monoxide detectors for limited time

Posted

LINCOLN COUNTY – For a limited time, community members can obtain a free carbon monoxide (CO) detector through the Lincoln County Health Department (LCHD).

The detectors have been made available through a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

In a release, LCHD said Lincoln County residents with a financial need who do not have a CO detector or have one that is old or expired are eligible.

LCHD explained that CO is produced anywhere fuels like gas, propane, charcoal and wood are burned. This includes gas appliances, wood stoves and portable generators.

“The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, blurred vision, sleepiness, confusion and loss of consciousness,” LCHD stated. “If you notice these symptoms or your alarm sounds, respond immediately. Call 911 after moving to an area with fresh air.”

LCHD offered the following CO safety tips:

  • Install a working CO detector on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • Replace detectors every five years (or according to manufacturer’s instructions), replace batteries twice a year (change them when clocks change) and test the detector monthly.
  • Remember that exposure can occur during recreational activities, such as camping, boating or UTVing.

CO detectors are available at LCHD, 697 N. Sales St., Merrill, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, while supplies last. Those who are unable to pick up during these hours, need other pickup arrangements or have questions can contact LCHD at 715-536-0307 or LCHealth@co.lincoln.wi.us.
