TOWN OF LITTLE RICE – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) this week announced that wolves depredated a hunting dog in the Town of Little Rice in Oneida County.
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services verified the depredation on Thursday, Dec. 11, according to the DNR.
The DNR reminded dog owners to exercise caution in wolf-occupied areas.
“Conflicts between hunting dogs and wolves are most common during the bear training and hunting seasons” DNR stated. “Dogs have also been depredated pursuing other wildlife, including foxes, coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, snowshoe hares and upland birds.”
The DNR partners with the USDA Wildlife Services department to investigate reported conflicts with wolves.
Interactive maps, past reports and damage payment information are available on the DNR's website.
Livestock producers who suspect a wolf or bear has depredated or is harassing livestock can contact USDA Wildlife Services at 1-800-228-1368 (northern Wisconsin) or 1-800-433-0663 (southern Wisconsin).
