MERRILL - Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October across the United States. Here in Lincoln County, it will begin with an Awareness Walk Tuesday, Oct. 1st on the River Bend Trail in Merrill, hosted by HAVEN (Household Abuse Victims Emergency Network). The public is invited to join in this walk, recognizing the impact of domestic violence on our community and showing support for the many people—adults and children—whose lives are affected by it.

HAVEN is the local source of advocacy, resources and emergency shelter for individuals and families who experience the many forms of interpersonal violence including verbal, emotional, physical, sexual and economic abuse. HAVEN also provides prevention education to the community.

Those who walk are invited to gather at the Agra Pavilion on the Park Street trailhead starting at 3:30 p.m. to enjoy pizza, generously donated by Hugo’s. The walk itself will begin around 4:30 p.m. Participants do not have to commit to any specific distance, and are welcome to go however far they choose in either direction on the trail.

Purple is the designated color for domestic violence awareness, and those walking are encouraged to show their support by wearing purple.

Those who perpetrate abuse in their own homes and closest relationships often tell the people they target that no one will ever believe them if they reveal what is happening. They dominate, degrade and dehumanize the ones they say they “love.” It takes tremendous courage to get out of an abusive relationship. When a person or family knows they are believed and supported, it makes a huge difference in their ability to overcome the abuse and deal with the very real challenges and changes involved.

HAVEN invites you to wear your purple, walk with us, enjoy the fall colors, raise awareness and show support for those who seek to end the abuse and violence in their lives.

If you have questions or concerns for yourself or someone else regarding interpersonal abuse, please call HAVEN at 715-536-1300 to speak with an advocate, available 24 hours.
