ASHWAUBENON – The Tomahawk High School boys’ swim team took part in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Sectional swim meet in Ashwaubenon on Saturday, Feb. 15, where several individuals and relays qualified for this week’s State meet.

The Tomahawk swimmers began the day with a record-setting medley relay and a 3rd-place finish, setting a new school record at 1:44.51.

“We knew then the day would be great,” said coach Theresa L’Esperance.

In all, 23 of the 27 Hatchet swimmers set personal records.

“It was fantastic to witness,” L’Esperance stated.

This year’s team set a new school record for State meet qualifiers, with four individual events and two relays making the cut.

Individual events include Dane DeKiep in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke; Sam Zastrow in the 100 freestyle; and Zach Germano in the 100 breaststroke.

Qualifying relays include the medley and 400 free, consisting of DeKiep, Germano, Zastrow and Bruce Peetz.

L’Esperance noted that Jack Amelse is the lead alternate after swimming personal bests in the 50 freestyle and the 200 free relay.

“Freshmen Connor Germano, Max Amelse and Aidan Sigl all set personal records in their respective events and will be alternates on the relay teams,” L’Esperance added. “Toby Scott continues to develop as a swimmer by setting two personal records in his 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.”

The State meet will be held in Waukesha on Friday, Feb. 21.
