George T. Pobuda, Jr., age 73, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. George was born and raised in Illinois and moved to Tomahawk after college. A longtime resident of Tomahawk, George was a Tomahawk School District teacher for over 30 years. He truly had a passion for education as both a teacher and as a student himself. He earned a bachelor's degree along with multiple master's degrees while still taking classes well into his retirement years. He was a huge advocate for helping his students inside and outside the classroom, always helping to further their educational goals. George was an excellent mentor to so many and was so impassioned with bringing a focus on education that he ran for governor of Wisconsin on an education platform.
George also had multiple hobbies and interests. He was a potter and photographer and exhibited his artwork at various shows throughout the Midwest. Pottery evolved into such a significant passion that he purchased a kiln and started his own business, Dragon Fired Pottery. He also thoroughly enjoyed visiting art shows and museums of all kinds wherever he traveled.
George very much enjoyed sports, watching, participating, and coaching. He was an avid fan of watching anything football, basketball, baseball, or hockey related. He found great happiness in participating in pool, golf, darts, and bowling leagues. He also moved up to the Northwoods specifically so he could enjoy hunting, fishing, shooting, and kayaking on a frequent basis. George became obsessed with fishing and kayaking and at one point had a business selling kayaks called Kayaks Are Us. His passion for fishing extended to joining multiple clubs and organizations. One of this favorite vacations was a fishing trip he took to Alaska where he accomplished a lifelong bucket list dream.
George also became something of an amateur horticulturist and gardener and enjoyed raising and caring for his beautiful orchids, plants, vegetables, fruits, and outdoor flower beds.
George is survived by his sister, Lauren (Rick) Tomaszkiewicz; his nephew, Chris Tomaszkiewicz; and his niece, Ellery (Alex) Woodworth. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Theresa Pobuda, Sr.
