For the Tomahawk Leader
MOSINEE – The Tomahawk High School football team traveled to Mosinee on Friday, Sept. 27 to try and spoil the Indians’ homecoming. The Hatchets gave it their best effort, but ultimately fell short 14-28.
The Hatchets got things going early behind the tough running of sophomore Tiegan Sarazin and senior Brayden Larson. Getting his first varsity start, Sarazin gained 120 yards on the ground in the first half. Larson was the only player for either side to reach the end zone in the first half. His three-yard touchdown run would close out the first half’s scoring and send the Hatchets into halftime with the 7-0 advantage.
The Indians would receive the ball to start the second half and get on the scoreboard quickly after a touchdown reception and converted extra point kick. The score even at 7-7 would see momentum in Mosinee’s favor. They marched down again and took the lead 7-14. Not backing down, Tomahawk would put together a drive of their own and cap it off with a 21-yard Larson touchdown run and Horabik extra point. The 14-14 tie would hold until late in the third quarter, when Mosinee took the lead on a short touchdown run. The failed extra point attempt would end the third quarter with Mosinee on top 14-20.
After a back and forth defensive battle, Mosinee would extend the lead in the fourth to 14-28. Tomahawk was unable to answer, and the loss put them at 2-4 on the season and 1-3 in GNC play up to that point.
Tomahawk’s offense was led on the ground by Larson, who finished the night with 27 carries for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Complementing the run game was Sarazin, who added 147 yards on 16 carries. Tomahawk ended the night with 343 yards of total offense to Mosinee’s 371 and held the possession advantage, 28:54 to 18:28, respectively.
“The scoreboard gave us the ending to the story, but did not reflect the effort and commitment that the guys showed all night,” said coach Dewey Reilly. “There isn’t a stat line that reflects how proud I am of the players and how they continually come together to compete, regardless of the circumstances. Win, lose, or draw, we play hard, and our opponents know they played a physical football game.”
Medford
The Hatchets lined up at Hatchet Field on Friday, Oct. 4 to take on Medford for Homecoming week.
