Fishing Report: Time to pivot into open water mode

Posted

NORTHERN WISCONSIN – After Sunday and Monday’s rain, most lakes will open up this week, or they’re in the final stages of ice-out. It’s time to pivot fully into open water fishing mode.

While a few stubborn ice shelves might linger in shaded bays, the transition is well underway, and anglers are already getting boats prepped and are already fishing in the shallows.

We’re still seeing some chilly overnight temps, and slow warm-ups during the day. But sunny days will boost surface temps and get fish moving. Look for temperatures creeping into the mid-40s as a signal that the shallow bite will be picking up. Now’s the time to walk shoreline spots or glass from the dock. Look for dimpling on the surface or birds working an area – these are sure signs you’re in the right place.

Coming up here, you’ll find crappie and perch starting to push into the warming shallows. Focus on dark-bottom bays, boat channels and muddy shorelines with just a little structure – like downed timber or early weed growth. These areas heat up quickly and attract baitfish and, in turn, hungry panfish. A small jig under a float, tipped with a plastic or fathead minnow, is a classic spring tactic. Light line and subtle twitches can be key in the cold, clear water at this time of the year.

The countdown to the game fishing opener (Saturday, May 3) continues, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to get on the water. Spring panfish action can be fast and fun, and it’s a great way to shake off the winter rust. In the meantime, let’s all hope the cold is behind us.

Good luck and good fishin’!
