City, county partnering on temporary repairs to W. Somo Ave.

State Hwy. 86 scheduled to be fully reconstructed by 2032

TOMAHAWK – A deteriorating stretch of road in the City of Tomahawk will receive temporary repairs in the coming weeks.

The city is slated to partner with Lincoln County on the project, which will impact W. Somo Ave. between N. 4th St. and N. Tomahawk Ave.

The project is expected to take place during the week before Memorial Day weekend.

The four-block stretch is anticipated to be closed for two to three days while the work is being done.

The temporary fix, which involves wedging the top layer of asphalt and applying an overlay, is expected to last about five years.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has planned a full reconstruction of State Hwy. 86 from U.S. Hwy. 51 to N. Tomahawk Ave. for 2030. The stretch of State Hwy. 86 from W. Somo Ave. to the Wisconsin River bridge is scheduled to be reconstructed in 2032.

Somo Ave., which doubles as part of State Hwy. 86, is maintained by the city from Charlotte St. to the Wisconsin River bridge.

“State funding helps, but it doesn’t fully cover rising maintenance costs, so local taxpayers help make up the difference,” City of Tomahawk Streets Department Leadperson Nick Rosenmeier said in an update on the city’s Facebook page. “This upcoming repair will be paid from the Street Department paving budget – not the state. Instead of using cold patch on potholes (which would add significant cost before paving), rough road signs have been placed to keep spending as responsible as possible.”

Rosenmeier noted that WisDOT sets construction timelines for projects such as the State Hwy. 86 reconstruction, with funding allocated by the State Legislature.

“Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain and improve our roads,” Rosenmeier stated.
