MADISON – State Representative Calvin Callahan (R-Tomahawk) this week announced that he has been appointed by the Joint Legislative Council to serve as the Chairman of the Study Committee on Cemeteries.
According to a release from Callahan’s office, the study committee will focus on recodifying and updating language in Wisconsin’s cemetery laws, as well as reviewing current laws regarding abandoned cemeteries and burials on non-cemetery property.
Callahan said he is honored that Legislative leadership has entrusted him with this “important responsibility.”
“Cemeteries and burial sites are sacred places for Wisconsinites and generations of our ancestors,” Callahan stated. “This committee will work to protect the honor and dignity of those who have passed away, ensuring that their burial sites are respected and preserved.”
Callahan said he “especially (looks) forward to speaking with the leading experts in this field, who will serve as citizen members of the committee.”
“I am immensely grateful for their willingness to share their time and expertise with us,” he stated. “In recent conversations with constituents, stakeholders and legislative attorneys, I have found broad consensus that Wisconsin’s cemetery laws are in need of a few updates. This committee presents a great opportunity to reinforce the dignity and respect we owe to those who came before us. I am humbled to serve as Chairman of the Study Committee on Cemeteries.”
