Bernard “Bernie” J. Haring, age 81, of Tomahawk, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024, at Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital. Bernie was born in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 11, 1942, to the late Bernard F. and Elizabeth (Schuit) Haring. He was married to Carol Leach on June 12, 1965; she survives.
Bernie was a 1960 graduate of Tomahawk High School. After school, he worked with his father at Ben Haring Plumbing & Heating. Bernie later joined the UA Local 434 Plumbers and Steamfitters in Wausau, Wis., where he worked for 50 years until his retirement. He served on the Tomahawk Fire Department for 42 years and remained active earning the title “Captain Emeritus.” He will truly be missed by his TFD family. In his younger years, Bernie coached Little League for the Tomahawk Terroirs. He enjoyed playing softball, throwing horseshoes, and bowling and loved being outdoors hunting and fishing. He continued an active life by pursuing his passion of gardening. Bernie took pride in maintaining his garden and visiting and selling the fruits of his labor at local farmers’ markets.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Carol Haring, of Tomahawk; his sons, Jim Haring and Brian Haring, both of Tomahawk; his brothers, Mike (Melissa) Haring and Joe (Laura) Haring, also of Tomahawk; his daughter-in-law, Leigh Ann Haring, of Savannah, Ga.; his sisters, Betty Lou McArdle, of Las Vegas, Nev., Peggy Hitt, of Fond du Lac, Wis., Pat (Mike) Butz, of St. Cloud, Wis., and Mary Carstensen, of Tomahawk; his grandchildren, Ian Haring, of Savannah, Ga., Brycen Huss, Samantha (Brian) Huss, and Briar Huss, all of Merrill, Wis.; his brothers-in-law, Harry Fender, of Ashley, Ind., and David Leach, of Merrill, Wis.; his sisters-in-law, Beverly Haring, of Tomahawk, Linda (Jon) Hudzinski, of Merrill, Wis., and Nancy Haring, of Superior, Wis. Bernie is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Betty; his son, Ron Haring; his brothers, Richard, Tom, and Bob Haring; his sisters, Agnes Fender and Virginia Larson; and his brothers-in-law, Dusty Carstensen, Ken Hitt, Mac McArdle, and Bob Larson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, at 1 p.m. Rev. Louis Maram Reddy officiated. The family received friends for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery.
