In February of 2007 Allen Jankowski known as AJ and Nancy Schauer challenged each other to a contest to see who could make the best pot of chili. They decided that any money raised would be donated to a local charity. American Legion Post 93 of Tomahawk supported the event by hosting the cook-off.

The first year they donated the proceeds to HAVEN which offers shelter and support to victims of domestic violence. This was the beginning of AJ’s Chili Cook-off. Later that year Allen Jankowski died, and that winter Nancy talked with his wife Nellie about continuing the event. It was decided that the proceeds would continue to be donated to HAVEN in memory of AJ. The first year there were only the two of them that were involved in the contest. In 2008 more people expressed interest in participating and over $400.00 was raised.

This year there were fourteen entries in the Chili Cook-off contest. Judy Hubatch, Katie Ziert, Chris Schieif, Dick VanStrydonk, Ken Goldbeck, Christie Fletcher, Bill Follstad, Jean Bishop, Erin Story, Judy Reason, Jackie Schoone, Pam Potaczek, Audrey Haring and Todd Schmidt. After the judges had tasted all of the chili, Todd Schmidt was declared the winner and presented with the Chili Cook-off Trophy.
Following the judging, all the chili was sold for $1.00 a bowl giving everyone on opportunity to sample the different flavors of chili. Along with the sale of the chili, everyone had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the prizes that were donated by many local individuals and business’s including; Billy Bob’s, Bridge Inn, Northwoods Bridal, Nancy Schauer, Bill and Jodi Jelinek, Silverado, Loaders, Oaks Pub, Bailey’s Town & Courtry, The American Legion, John Sattler, Subway, Boomba Bar, Karyl’s Stylin, Ron & Jan Peirdzioch, Holiday Gas Station, Statton’s General Store, Happy Snapper, Portable Welding & Repair, Don & Audrey Lue, Jake Luther & Katie Ziert, Lemke’s Tomahawk Foods, Ben Franklin, K 7 K Rivers Edge, Touch of Gold, Dan Osero and Claudia, Ken & Lois Wyland, Four Corners Tap,and Carri Foster. The organizers and the American Legion extend a big Thanks to all of you for your support.

Plans are already in the works for the 2010 Chili Cook-off with plans to make it even bigger and better.

Can “out-of-towners” enter? I’ve developed a recipe that’s sweet & then about 5 seconds later bites back.

The event is scheduled for early Feb. 2010. They will be taking a limited number of entries and it is open to anyone. Check with me a month or so ahead of that and I will let you know who to contact.
