Letters to the Editor published in the July 20, 2022 issue of the Tomahawk Leader.

Northwoods Garden Club

I recently visited Tomahawk where I grew up (my parents are Jan Sweeney Zuiker and Dar Sweeney.) During my visit, I saw the latest annual flower planting on the city’s street boulevards, and it is beautiful.

Knowing my mother, Jan Sweeney Zuiker was one of the garden club members of the Northwoods Garden Club who did this year’s planting, I asked her how long the garden club has been doing the annual flowers planting.

She wasn’t sure so I Googled Tomahawk Leader and found a news article about the club’s plantings which stated that the planting of annuals on the boulevards began in 1963. For the last fifty-nine years, the members of the club have planted with plants purchased by the city from local businesses. The city of Tomahawk also waters the plants during the flower season.

What a great community partnership.

I understand that The Northwoods Garden Club is ending their many years of service with this summer’s plantings. I want to do a shout out to all the dedicated Northwoods Garden Club members past and present as well as the city of Tomahawk and their community partners who have been keeping the city of Tomahawk looking so lovely for so many years.

Sincerely yours,

Kathy Sweeney
