Girl Scout Week 2024: Cookie season underway; local troops highlight activites

For the Tomahawk Leader

WISCONSIN – With 2024’s Girl Scout Week underway, local troops are sharing information about the week and the 2024 cookie season, as well as highlighting the variety of activities Tomahawk-area Scouts take part in each year.

Girl Scout Week

This year’s Girl Scout Week started on Sunday, March 10 and will run through Saturday, March 16. Throughout the week, Scouts will take part in a variety of activites, including giving special gifts and community service.

Scouts around the country also celebrated the organization’s 112th birthday this week.

“Girl Scouts’ birthday, March 12, commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization’s first 18 members in Savannah, Ga.,” the Girl Scouts website says. “Girl Scout Week is celebrated each March, starting with Girl Scout Sunday and ending with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday, and it always includes Girl Scouts’ birthday, March 12.”

Cookie season

Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes (GSNWGL)’s cookie season is currently underway.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program, the annual event in which Girl Scouts unbox their futures through the world’s largest entrepreneurial program for girls, is slated to run through Sunday, March 31.

A release from GSNWGL said Girl Scouts will earn funds to fuel outdoor experiences, STEM and beyond.

“During this highly-anticipated time of year, Girl Scouts flex their entrepreneurial muscles and acquire essential life skills like goal-setting, decision-making, money management, people skills and business ethics,” GSNWGL stated. “All net proceeds from cookie sales stay local to power incredible Girl Scout experiences year-round.”

GSNWGL said this year’s theme, “Unbox the Future,” aims to remove social barriers that often keep girls boxed in.

“When bold, goal-getting Girl Scouts sell a package of cookies, they do much more than what’s seen at face value,” GSNWGL said. “Girl Scouts are entrepreneurial powerhouses, creating a more equitable future for themselves and the world. Supporting the Girl Scout Cookie Program provides invaluable experiences for members, such as service projects, troop travel, and summer camp.”

Individuals can now support their local Girl Scout entrepreneurs by ordering from an assortment of Girl Scout Cookies, including fan favorites such as Thin Mints®, Caramel deLites®, Peanut Butter Sandwich and more.

“Through the power of these iconic cookies, we empower our Girl Scouts to dream big and build confidence while learning invaluable life skills,” said Patti Shafto-Carlson, CEO of GSNWGL. “This program not only delivers favorite treats, but also fosters a sense of community and instills the importance of goal setting, money management and so much more. Together, we are shaping the future leaders of tomorrow, one cookie at a time.”
