THS student Ella Uelmen selected for 2024 Senate Scholar Program

For the Tomahawk Leader

MADISION – A Tomahawk student will participate in a week-long, intensive program at the State Capitol in Madison.

State Senator Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) last week announced that Tomahawk High School (THS) student Ella Uelmen had been selected to take part in the 2024 Senate Scholar Program.

Brody Kowieski of Rhinelander High School was also chosen for the program.

A release from Felzkowski’s office said the program’s “rigorous curriculum is two-fold.”

“First, the students are introduced to many facets of the legislative process,” the release stated. “The Scholars will meet with legislative support agencies, legislative staff, the Governor’s staff, a Supreme Court Justice, the media, lobbyists and University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty members.”

The students then put their knowledge into action.

“When the Senate is on the floor, Scholars staff the session under the direction of the Senate Sergeant at Arms’ office,” the release said.

The week’s events will culminate in a Senate Scholar committee hearing on a bill that the students have drafted.

Felzkowski’s office began accepting program applications from high school juniors and seniors from within the 12th Senate District in Sept. 2023. Applications were accepted until Nov. 2023.
