Michael E. Waters Sr., age 82, of Tomahawk, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, under the care of his family and Compassus Hospice. Mike was born in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Ellery and Mildred (Bothum) Waters. He proudly served as a military police officer in the United States Army’s 385th Military Police Battalion in Kornwestheim, Germany. Mike was married to Darlene Diek on Dec. 16, 1961.
Mike was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Area Technical College Criminal Justice Programs. He was employed as a police officer with the Milwaukee Police Department and later was the chief criminal investigator with the State of Wisconsin’s Public Defenders Office where he created the State of Wisconsin Civil Service Examination for investigators. He shared his knowledge as a guest lecturer for Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee Police Academy. In his younger years, he enjoyed mentoring children and coaching football and basketball. Mike was a member of the Eagles Club in Milwaukee.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Darlene Waters; his sons, Michael E. (Gina) Waters Jr., Mark P. (Sherry) Waters, and Matthew J. Waters; and his brothers, Tom Waters and John Waters. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Jake, Jessica, Brittany, Brooke, and Mikayla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellery and Mildred; and his brother, Daniel Waters.
