Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital achieves Level IV Trauma Care Facility classification

For the Tomahawk Leader

TOMAHAWK – Aspirus Health today announced that Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital has achieved classification as a Level IV Trauma Care Facility by the State of Wisconsin.

Staff from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) reviewed the hospital in a recent onsite visit, and the Tomahawk hospital received a letter from the state congratulating the facility on the trauma designation.

“This is truly impressive, and we commend you and your hospital staff for your ongoing commitment to providing quality care to trauma patients in your area,” said Mark Wegner, MD, Chronic Disease Medical Advisor, Wisconsin Division of Public Health.

Wegner also thanked Aspirus Tomahawk staff for their “dedication to the development of the state trauma care system.”

Aspirus explained that Wisconsin’s integrated system of trauma identifies hospitals as trauma care facilities by using four levels.

“This system recognizes that all hospitals in Wisconsin play an important role in providing optimal treatment to the injured patient,” Aspirus stated. “It is imperative that patients are delivered in a timely manner to the closest appropriate hospital matching resources to the needs of the severely injured patient.”

The primary role of a Level IV facility is to provide stabilization and advanced trauma life support prior to transfer to a higher-level facility.

Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital’s Level IV Classification is good for three years.

“Providing high-quality trauma care is a true team effort and demonstrates the ability of our facility and local EMS partners to provide this level of care to people in our area when they need it most,” said Teri Theiler, President, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital and Aspirus Health’s North Division.

“Our Emergency Department clinicians and associates regularly complete additional training and certifications in emergency medicine and trauma care to support the care and treatment of trauma patients,” said Carmen Viegut, Director of Nursing, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital. “This level of training in adult and pediatric trauma areas is something we take great pride in, and we congratulate our entire team for this accomplishment.”

Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient hospital services and 24-hour emergency care.

“Serving residents in the counties of Oneida and Lincoln, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital offers convenient access to experienced primary care and specialty care doctors,” Aspirus stated.
