Walt V. Halverson, age 75, of Tomahawk, passed away on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Walt was born in Tomahawk on Nov. 23, 1947, to the late Carl and Irma (Gaedtke) Halverson. He was married to Carol Krueger on March 4, 1967; she survives.

Walt was a lifelong resident of Tomahawk, graduating from Tomahawk High School with the Class of 1965. After high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where he received two master’s degrees. Walt’s passion was teaching and he was known as the “gentle giant” within the Tomahawk School District. In his early teaching career, he served as principal in the Town of Harrison. He later taught many years in the elementary school, touching the lives of young students. In 2002, Walt retired after 32 years of service. Everything he did he did for the right reasons and wanted nothing in return.

Walt was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. He enjoyed painting from a very young age and was a gifted crafter. Walt shared his crafts as a vendor at the flea market in St. Germain, Wis., and locally at the Old Towne Mall, a store which still holds a collection of his work. He had an eye for floral design and spent countless hours helping in the floral department at Nelson’s Super Market, helping Rita at Rita’s Scarlet Garden, and working from his home when contacted by couples to do their weddings. Walt had a love for music and dancing. He was a talented cook who was delighted to share his creations with family and friends. Walt loved to travel and looked forward to his fishing trips to Canada and his annual vacations to Florida. Above all, Walt cherished family and will always be remembered by the Tomahawk community for his bright, caring, and kind personality.

Survivors include his wife of over 56 years, Carol Halverson; his sons, Shawn (Shirley) Halverson and Jason (Shannon) Halverson; his daughter-in-law, Tracy Halverson; his sister, Jan VanNorman; his brother-in-law, Jim VanNorman; and his sister-in-law, Linda Halverson. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Shane Halverson and Amanda Halverson; his step-grandchildren, Carissa Handrick, Tucker VanRyen, Hunter VanRyen, Casey Rossiter, Eric Ravelo, and Amber Ames; and his step-great-grandchildren, Leah Handrick, Charlotte Rossiter, Lydia Ravelo, Emmitt Ravelo, and Corbin Cannon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Irma; his son, Todd Halverson; his sisters, Lorraine Musch and Donna Halverson; his brother, Carl Halverson; and his brother-in-law, Al Musch.

Memorial services for Walt Halverson were held on Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church, at 11 a.m. Pastor Susan Christian officiated. The family received friends for visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Inurnment was held at Greenwood Cemetery in the Town of Bradley. Generations Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family. You may view Walt’s obituary and leave online condolences at www.generationsfuneral.com.
