Hatchet golfers show improvement at GNC meets

RHINELANDER – The Tomahawk Hatchet golf team took part in several Great Northern Conference (GNC) meets last week and improved their overall team finishes with each meet.

Rhinelander

The Hatchets competed at Northwood Country Club in Rhinelander on Monday, May 8, where they finished in seventh place out of seven teams.

Owen Dickrell and Austin Lamer were the top Tomahawk golfers, each finishing the day with a score of 88 strokes. Drew Albert ended the day with a 96, Sawyer Hanna shot a 107 and Caiden Reichelt finished his round with a 120.

Coach Garth Gerstenberger said the team played much better on the back nine.

“Caiden had the shot of the day, when he holed out from 20 yards off the green on hole 5,” Gerstenberger said, adding that Albert’s score of 96 was a personal record.

Team scores: Lakeland, 320; Medford, 323; Mosinee, 340; Rhinelander, 351; Northland Pines, 359; Antigo, 366; Tomahawk, 380.

Antigo

On Tuesday, May 9, the Tomahawk golfers traveled to Bass Lake Country Club north of Antigo and came away with a sixth-place finish.

Dickrell ended the day with a score of 81, while Hanna and Lamer each shot an 87. Albert finished with a 100, and Carson Childers shot a 105.

“Owen Dickrell continues to play consistent golf,” Gerstenberger stated after the meet. “He had 10 pars today and was able to finish 10th in the meet. Austin Lamer had the shot of the day, when he chipped in for birdie on the 11th hole. It was part of five-hole stretch where he shot one under par. Sawyer Hanna had a 39 on the back nine for the low nine of the day for the Hatchets.”

Team scores: Medford, 309; Lakeland, 312; Rhinelander, 325; Mosinee, 341; Northland Pines, 343; Tomahawk, 355; Antigo, 369.

Eagle River

The Hatchet golfers came away with a fifth-place finish in Eagle River on Friday, May 12.

Dickrell finished in a tie for fifth overall with a score of 78. Other Hatchet scores were Lamer, 86; Albert, 91, Hanna, 93; Childers, 111.

Team scores: Lakeland, 312; Medford, 323; Rhinelander, 325; Northland Pines, 338; Tomahawk, 348; Mosinee, 351; Antigo, 353.

JV

The JV golfers were in Mosinee on Tuesday, May 9, where Riley Massa shot his best round of the year with a score of 53.

Other Hatchet finishers: Trevor Schumann, 61; Caiden Reichelt, 61; Sophia Kiser, 66; Quentin Susa, 68; Lydia Ziert, 75.

On Friday, May 12, the JV squad took sixth place in a scramble in Rhinelander.

Hatchet scores: Reichelt, 94; Nate Reimer, 94; Ziert, 100; Kiser, 100; Massa, 101; Susa, 101.

Team scores: Lakeland, 161; Medford, 168; Rhinelander, 177; Mosinee, 186; Antigo, 187; Tomahawk, 195; Northland Pines, 218.

This week’s action

The Hatchets are set to golf on their home turf this week, with a GNC meet at Inshalla Country Club on Tuesday, May 16; and a triangular against Northland Pines at Inshalla on Friday, May 19.

The JV squad is slated to travel to Timber Ridge Golf Course in Minocqua on Monday, May 15. On Friday, May 19, the JV golfers will take part in a triangular against Northland Pines at Inshalla.
