Two killed in head-on crash in Town of Russell

TOWN OF RUSSELL – Two people were killed in a head-on crash in the Town of Russell on Wednesday, May 10.

According to a Thursday, May 11 release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:31 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries in the area of State Rd. 17 and County Rd. CCC. Upon arrival on the scene, it was discovered that the drivers of the vehicles were deceased.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Alice Peterson, 59, of Gleason, and Alissa Sosnovske, 22, of Gleason.

The Sheriff’s Office said investigation showed that Peterson was traveling southbound on State Rd. 17 when her vehicle crossed the centerline and entered into the northbound lane of traffic on the bridge over the Prairie River, just north of County Rd. CCC. Peterson’s vehicle struck a northbound vehicle, operated by Sosnovske.

Peterson and Sosnovske, the sole occupants of their respective vehicles, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate why Peterson crossed the centerline. Alcohol is believed to be a factor, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the Merrill Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Merrill Fire Ambulance and the Town of Russell Fire Department.
