William “Mr. Bill” A. Kubitschek, age 87, of Tomahawk, and formerly of St. Paul, Minn., and New Brighton, Minn., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, at Country Terrace Assisted Living. Bill was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Feb. 19, 1935, to the late Aloysius and Clara (Kolstad) Kubitschek.

Bill was raised in Minnesota and attended the Humboldt High School in St. Paul, Minn. He served his country as an aviation mechanic in the United States Navy, serving part of his time in Guam, and was honorably discharged in 1960. Bill was a talented jack-of-all trades. He installed many bowling lanes throughout the Midwest including Tomahawk Bowl and the Mermaid Lanes in Mounds View, Minn. He owned and operated Dakota Bowl in Rosemount, Minn., in the ‘70s and worked for AMF prior to owning and operating Quality Service Bowling Equipment in Fridley, Minn., for many years. Bill’s passion was sailing. He enjoyed sailing Lake Superior out of Bayfield, Wis., channeling through to the Bahamas. He resided on his sailboat for a year prior to settling in Tomahawk in 1983. He then purchased Margie’s Tavern and renamed it “Mr. Bill’s” of which he owned and operated until 2010. Bill was an active member of the Tomahawk Lions Club and a generous supporter of Special Olympics and Lincoln Industries. He loved Fox News and the local radio station, WJJQ, listening to both at volume 100. Bill was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild Fan.

Survivors include his daughters, Debra Kubitschek, of Fridley, Minn., and Tami (Randy) Schmidt, of Mounds View, Minn., and his son, Bob (Brenda) Kubitschek, of Tomahawk, and their mother, Marlene (Burgess) Kubitschek, of New Brighton, Minn.; his daughter, Angela (Kory) Bortnem, of Brookings, S.D.; his daughter, Tricia (Jason) Renn, of Tomahawk, and her mother, Daisy (Barr) Kubitschek, also of Tomahawk; his brother, Tom Kubitschek, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; and his sister, Janet McMillann, of Mesa, Ariz.; and his grandchildren, Benjamin, Bradley, Shara, Ryan, Corey, Laci, Nicole, KayDee, Machelle, William, Buddy, and Danielle, all of Minnesota, Katelyn, Brooklyn, Matthew, and Tessa, all of South Dakota, and Ava and Clara, both of Tomahawk. Bill is further survived by 16 great-grandchildren, in addition to his beloved dog, Lexi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Clara (Kolstad) Kubitschek, of St Paul, Minn.; his daughter, Janell Kubitschek, of Blaine, Minn.; his grandson, Nicholas Rickard, of Cedar, Minn.; his brother, Louis Kubitschek, of Lee Summit, Mo.; and his companion, Sylvia Locken, of Mitchell, S.D., (Angela’s mother).

The family would like to thank the staff at Country Terrace Assisted Living for their care of dad and advocating for the family. (The banner went up and he thought it was his birthday and …… “We get to push the button!!! “). Also, many thanks to our Aspirus Hospice team that knew just what dad and our family needed.

Memorial services with military honors were held on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at 12 p.m., at Generations Funeral Home, Tomahawk. Rev. Larry Mathein officiated. The family received friends for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 12 p.m. Generations Funeral Home and Crematory assisted the family.
