For the Tomahawk Leader

RHINELANDER – The Tomahawk Hatchet boys’ basketball team faced off against the Rhinelander Hodags in a conference showdown on Friday, Jan. 13.

Tomahawk’s home game against Elcho scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10 was postponed to Thursday, Feb. 2.

The first half against the Hodags saw a competitive contest, with both teams trading runs. The Hatchets had a hard time keeping Rhinelander out of the paint with their quick guard play, and Rhinelander took a 33-12 lead into halftime.

The second half was more of the same story, as Rhinelander’s quickness proved to be a tough match for the Hatchets, and Rhinelander came away with a 65 to 34 win.

The leading scorers for Tomahawk were Gavyn Palmer and Tyler Jablonski, who each had 11 points.

Coach Jacob Jarvensivu said he thought the Hatchets “were shell shocked early.”

“(Rhinelander’s) quickness is something we’ve only seen a couple of times this year, and coach Lemmens always has them really organized,” Jarvensivu stated. “I look forward to getting better in the next few weeks and getting another chance at them, because I think that we can do a better job on a bunch of their actions defensively.”

This week’s action

Tomahawk is scheduled to travel to Tigerton on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

On Friday, Jan. 20, the Hatchets will host Northland Pines in a game that gets underway at 7:15 p.m.
