Joyce M. Sherman

Joyce M. Sherman, age 94, a lifelong resident of Tomahawk, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at Tomahawk Health Services. Joyce was born in Tomahawk on May 27, 1928, to the late Albert “AJ” and Hazel (Stewart) Hetzel. She was married to Jerome Sherman on March 29, 1951, at Fort Belvoir Army Base in Fairfax, Va.; he preceded her in death.

Joyce graduated from Tomahawk High School as the salutatorian of the Class of 1947. She attended Whitewater State Teachers College, obtaining her bachelor’s degree in 1951, and later earned her Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1971. Joyce was a well-known business teacher with the Tomahawk School District, where she taught from 1965 to 1987. She enjoyed football, golf, following NASCAR, and reading. Joyce was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, where she was active in Bible study and enjoyed all church activities. She was a caring and bright soul who left a huge impact within the Tomahawk community.

Survivors include her son, Joe (Mary Anne) Sherman, of Tomahawk; her daughters, Karen (Jeff) Kuczmarski, of Rhinelander, Wis., Carol (Joel) Lechleitner, Cathy (Gene) Heikkinen, and Chris (Jim) Newman, all of Tomahawk; her brother, Howard Hetzel, of Tomahawk; and her sisters, Jane Zwirchitz, of Abbotsford, Wis., and Marilyn Hulstedt, of Rockford, Ill. Joyce is further survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, AJ and Hazel; her husband, Jerome; her three sisters, Harriet Suckow, Jeannette Unangst, and Audrey Gould; and her two great-granddaughters, Aubrey Koehler and Kamlyn Kallerud.
