LCHD recommending flu vaccinations ahead of holiday season

For the Tomahawk Leader

LINCOLN COUNTY – The Lincoln County Health Department (LCHD) is reminding community residents of ways to stay healthy as families begin gathering over the holiday season.

A release from LCHD said there are early signs that the 2022-2023 flu season in the United States could be severe, “so it is important that we take action.”

“It is recommended that everyone ages six months and older get an annual flu vaccine,” LCHD stated, adding that getting a flu vaccine is especially important for people at high risk for serious flu complications, including people who are pregnant; young children; people 65 years and older, especially those living in group settings; and people with certain medical conditions, such as asthma or heart disease.

According to the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, 17.2% of Lincoln County residents had received a flu vaccine as of Thursday, Oct. 27. 18% of Wisconsin residents had received a flu vaccine as of that date.

LCHD also provided several things to keep in mind during the flu season:

  • Get your flu shot. Getting the annual flu vaccination is a great way to reduce your risk of flu and flu complications.
  • It’s not too late. The best time to get vaccinated against the flu is now. Flu season typically begins in the fall, but flu activity peaks between December and February.
  • Wash your hands. Prevent the spread of germs by washing your hands often.
  • Get your annual screenings done. Visit your doctor and dentist for preventive services and regular checkups. This could help detect underlying issues before they become a problem.
  • Practice self-care and connect with others. Practice taking deep breaths, stretching or meditating throughout the day to relieve some stress that you may be experiencing. Talk to individuals that you trust and let them know how you are feeling.
  • Stay home when you are sick. Staying home when you are ill is an important way to avoid spreading germs and making sure you are not getting others sick.

“LCHD wants you and your family to have a safe and healthy holiday season,” LCHD said. “We are here to help you with the resources you need to stay healthy.”
