Hatchets fall to Hematites in Homecoming matchup

TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Hatchet football team hosted Ishpeming, Mich., for its Homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 7 and ultimately fell by a score of 16-10.

The Hatchets ended the game with 175 total yards, while the Hematites racked up 197.

Tomahawk tallied 155 rushing yards on 25 attempts. All of Ishpeming’s 197 yards in the came on the ground on 40 rushes.

Mason Evans (12 carries, 24 yards) and quarterback Tyler Jablonski (eight carries, 87 yards, one touchdown) led the way for the Hatchets on the ground. Addison Peissig (three carries, 35 yards) and Zack Friske (two carries, nine yards) also contributed to the Hatchet rushing attack.

Through the air, Jablonski completed five of 10 passes for 20 yards and an interception. Evans caught three of those passes for 15 yards. Mitch Jimenez hauled in one pass for five yards.

Hatchet kicker William Tombs made one 37-yard field goal and one extra point.

The Hatchets converted five first downs, while the Hematites converted 17.

Tomahawk went 1-7 and 1-2 on third and fourth downs, respectively. Ishpeming went 8-14 on third down and 1-4 on fourth down.

The lone turnover of the game came when the Hatchets lost a fumble.

Only three penalties were committed during the game, all by the Hematites, costing them 15 yards.

Tomahawk maintained possession for 17:27, while Ishpeming had the ball for 30:33.

With the loss to Ishpeming and a forfeit win over Menominee Indian, the Hatchets’ overall record stood at 4-5 (2-4 in the Northwoods Football Conference).

Ishpeming improved to 4-3 with the win over Tomahawk.

The Hatchets will wrap up the regular season in Clintonville on Friday, Oct. 14. Kickoff for the game against the Truckers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
