Douglas (Doug) Arthur Akey

Douglas (Doug) Arthur Akey, 80, of Tomahawk, passed into His loving arms unexpectedly on Sept. 1, 2022. Born to the late Mabel and Arthur Akey on June 28, 1942, Doug was the fourth of six children.

Upon graduating from Iola High School, Doug proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving at sea throughout the Mediterranean and India. Following a highly successful, 30-year career at Appleton Machine Co. (later owned by several Finnish corporations), he realized his dream of retiring to his cottage in Tomahawk, were he enjoyed two of his favorite passions: hunting and fishing. A tradition which his beloved son, Todd, continues today.

In addition to his unwavering work ethic, Doug was a proud father and husband; fiercely loyal to his family as well as those who called him friend. Competitive by nature, it was far more entertaining and enjoyable to allow Doug to “win” at both games of chance and games of skill as anyone having ever shot pool, bowled, played cards, or shook dice can attest. Traits and characteristics clearly evidenced in the children, grandchild and legacy he leaves behind.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Barbara; daughter Stacey (Jeff Clark) Akey; son Todd (Kara Williams) Akey; granddaughter Kaylee; sister Nancy Roloff; two brothers: Wayne (Judi) Akey and Frank (Dawn) Akey; several nieces/nephews and his shelter-pet companion, Vincent. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters: Jeanine Finch and Sharon Beyersdorf and his nephew Harold (Pete) Finch.

To honor Doug’s legacy and casually celebrate a life well-lived, family and friends were welcome to gather: Celebration of Life – Douglas A. Akey, American Legion Post 0093, Tomahawk, Wis., Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022 at 2 p.m. Military Honors were performed by the Veterans of Tomahawk Honor Guard at 2:30 p.m.

In recognition of Doug’s service and love of God and country, donations can be made to the American Legion in lieu of flowers. Generations Funeral Home & Crematory, Tomahawk, assisted the family.
