Hatchet volleyball season gets off to solid start

D.C. EVEREST – The Tomahawk Hatchet volleyball team recently strung together a series of impressive matches to start its season.

D.C. Everest Invite

The Hatchets took part in the D.C. Everest Invite on Saturday, Sept. 3, beating SPASH, 25-21, 25-18, 15-6; Wausau Newman, 25-14, 23-25, 16-14; and Merrill, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13.

Tomahawk lost to Wausau East, 25-22, 12-25, 15-17.

Antigo

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Hatchets traveled to Antigo, where the JV squads got the opportunity to split and take on both of Antigo’s JV and JV2 teams.

The first JV group ended up losing some very close matches at 23-25, 22-25, and 22-25.

Coach Keith Hanse said Alicia Voermans dominated the offense, and Molly Jablonski was consistent with her serves and sets.

The second JV group ended up winning two sets to one, with scores of 28-30, 25-16, and 25-21.

Siennah Calkins led serving with three aces, while Freya Alberg led the offense with six kills and two blocks. Sophie Olsen was high setter with 10 assists.

Hanse noted that the varsity squad came out shining in their first conference matchup of the season, beating the Red Robins in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-10.

“The offense was dominated by the Scholz sisters, with Meghan having 15 kills and Mackenzie with 19 assists,” Hanse stated.

The team had six aces on the night, and Alyssa Zehner led with 10 digs.

Marathon

The Tomahawk spikers swept Marathon on the road on Thursday, Sept. 8, by scores 25-20 in all three matches.

Meghan Scholz had 20 kills and one ace, Alyssa Zehner had 13 kills and five digs, Claire Albert had three aces, eight digs and one kill, Mackenzie Scholz had 35 assists, five aces and 2 digs, Sam Gebauer had 14 digs, one ace and three assists, and Emerson Lange had 11 digs and four kills.

The Hatchets were slated to take part in an invitational in Merrill on Saturday, Sept. 10 and a match against Lakeland in Tomahawk on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Tomahawk will compete in a conference tournament at Northland Pines High School in Eagle River on Saturday, Sept. 17. The tournament gets underway at 10 a.m.
