For the Tomahawk Leader

ANTIGO – The Tomahawk Hatchet track and field team traveled to Antigo on Tuesday, May 17 to compete against seven teams in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) meet.

“It is that point in the season where we want to see our athletes start to run their best times and place high in any meet we are in,” said coach Kurt Cordova. “Tonight was no different, and all the athletes came out and gave it their all.”

The Lady Hatchets placed in 5th overall with 76.33 points, behind the conference champs, Mosinee.

The Hatchet boys placed 7th overall, scoring 27 points, behind 1st-place team Rhinelander with 164 points.

Morgan Hansmann, Rachael Reilly, Ava Dragosh and Macey Mann took first place in the 3200m relay.

“The girls’ 3200m relay was an excellent sight to see, running their best time of the season and clinching the only 1st-place All-Conference of the meet,” Cordova stated.

“The boys’ team stayed strong tonight with their low numbers to compete at the highest level,” Cordova said. “Joey Reiter had another great night for shot put, placing 3rd with another personal record in the event. The boys’ 1600m relay and 800m relay are starting to get fluent with each other’s handoff styles and running their best times of the season. It turned into an all around great night for the Boys.”

Athletes of the Week

Rachael Reilly – 3200m relay, 1st; 3200m run, 2nd.

“Rachael had a great night, tonight pushing herself in the 3200m relay and coming up with her best split of the season to help the team to a first place finish. Later she went on to take a second-place finish in the 3200m run and set a new season best. She has been patient with her running and is working toward speeding up to catch up to her personal best. She has a lot of room to improve in the 3200 and I think we will start to see that through Regionals and sectionals.”

Ava Dragosh – 3200m relay, 1st; pole vault, 3rd.

“Ava has been working really hard this season to get consistent with pole vault. Tonight it started to click together and helped her get a new seasonal best. She also has pushed herself in the last two meets to improve her 800 split for the 3200m relay. Tonight was no different, as her split was another season best and helped the team claim a 1st place finish.”

Keagyn Schoone – 400m relay, 4th; 110m hurdles, 8th.

“Keagyn had a great night tonight as he competed in the hurdles for the second time of the season. He did great and took an 8th-place finish to score points for the Hatchet boys. Later, he went on to help the 400m relay take a 6th-place finish to add even more to the boys’ score. He has been asking all year to run an open 800m run and tonight he got the chance, taking 14th place and running a great time. It is a big challenge for a runner who primarily does sprints to go out and try the longer mid-distance race, and he rose to the challenge and did great.”

Ryan Larson – 1600m relay, 4th; 800m relay, 5th.

“Ryan has worked hard this year on increasing his speed in the sprints. His dedication has shown, as he has been setting new personal records in not only the open sprints as well and having some of the fastest split times for the relays. His efforts had helped the 1600m relay and 800m relay to 4th– and 5th– place finishes and new season bests.”

The Hatchets are slated to host a Regional meet on Monday, May 23.
