For the Tomahawk Leader
EAGLE RIVER – The Tomahawk Hatchet track and field team traveled to Northland Pines High School on Thursday, April 28 to compete against five teams in an outdoor relay track meet.
The Lady Hatchets placed in 2nd overall with 74 points, falling just short of 1st place Rhinelander with 77. The boys placed 5th overall, scoring 18 points.
“This was an interesting meet for our athletes to compete in,” head coach Kurt Cordova said. “All relays means everyone on the team had to do their part to get the top finishes. Everyone put forth the effort, even though we were asking for a lot of mileage from our athletes. It was good to see them push through the fatigue in every race. ”

“This was the first time we could get outside and compete in our field events,” Cordova stated. “Dealing with the elements has not been easy this year, but the field events went great. We had a few of the athletes place in the top three in more than one event and a few hit new personal records. That’s a great start to our outdoor season. ”
Athletes of the Week
Emily Maki: Long jump, 1st; 4x100m relay, 2nd; triple jump, 3rd.
“Emily had a great meet tonight, taking first in long jump and third in triple jump adding field points to the team. She also ran a great 100m relay split as well to help the team take a 2nd-place finish. She has worked hard to progress through her senior year in long and triple as well as being our lone female hurdler.”
Presley Gutbrod: Distance medley, 3rd; 4x800m relay, 3rd; 4x400m relay, 4th.
“Presley has been a great asset on the team this year and has filled in to any spot we need him. Last meet he filled in for some sprints and did very well, but today he helped out the distance team, helping pave the way to two 3rd-place finishes and a 4th-place finish in the 4×400. He has progressed very well this year in both distance and sprints to cement more points for the hatchet boys.”
The Tomahawk Hatchet tracksters are slated to take part in an invitational in Three Lakes on Tuesday, May 3. On Friday, May 6, the Hatchets will travel to Merrill for a meet that gets underway at 5 p.m.
