For the Tomahawk Leader

EAGLE RIVER – The Tomahawk Hatchet track and field team travelled to Northland Pines High School on Thursday, April 7 to compete against nine teams in an indoor track meet.

“Northland Pines is only our second indoor meet of the season and one that allowed us to spread our athletes out into events they wanted to try,” said coach Kurt Cordova. “It turned into a great meet for us all around with some of the athletes putting out times close to their previous season personal record.”

The Lady Hatchets placed 4th overall with 72.5 points, but fell just short of first place team Medford. The boys placed 8th overall, scoring 29 points.

Micah Arnott took first place in the high jump.

Other top performances for the Hatchets included: Rachel Reilly, 3200m run, 2nd; Robin Schmidt, 3200m run, 3rd; Ava Dragosh, pole vault, 3rd; Macey Mann, 1600m run, 3rd; Emily Maki, 55m hurdles, 4th; Halle Derleth, triple jump, 5th; Kaylynn Sandry, high jump, 5th; Emily Lacina, 800m run, 5th; Arawen Alberg, pole vault, 6th; Serena Reinke, 1600m run, 6th; Emily Maki, 200m hurdles, 6th; Ty Anthes, 800m run, 7th; Zach Hanse, 200m dash, 7th; Zach Hanse, high jump, 7th; Joey Reiter, shot put, 7th.

Top relay finishes: Halle Derleth, Ava Dragosh, Kaylynn Sandry, Macey Mann, 1600m relay, 3rd; Morgan Hansmann, Kate Reilly, Emily Lacina, Rachel Reilly, 3200m relay, 3rd; Presley Gutbrod, Taje Casey, Sam Zastrow, Ty Anthes, 3200m relay, 5th; Dominic Boos, Zach Hanse, Presley Gutbrod, Micah Arnott, 800m relay, 5th; Zach Hanse, Keagyn Schoone, Domonic Boos, Dane Schoenenberger, 1600m relay, 6th.

“It was a great day for our relay teams with having a varsity and JV in most of them,” Cordova stated. “All the relays ended up scoring points and giving us split times for all of our athletes to use in future meets. There is a lot that goes into finding your relay teams that are fluent with each other for tournament time.”

Athletes of the Week

Robin Schmidt placed third in the 3200m run.

“Robin had a great meet, starting with running in the JV 4x800m relay, where she ran one of the fastest split times on the team,” Cordova said. “This led to her 3200m run, where she took third place with a time that was only a few seconds behind her PR. She has progressed so well from her freshman year and she is becoming a big presence on the team.”

Micah Arnott took first place in the high jump and finished fifth in the 4x200m relay.

“Micah is a senior this year, and we have high hopes for his improvement for high jump,” Cordova stated. “Today he jumped just 2” below his PR in his first meet of the year. That’s a great spot to be in when we start this transition from indoor season to outdoor season. He has been working hard to improve himself every day and we are excited to see where it takes him. He also helped our 4x200m relay move into the 5th place position. ”

The Hatchets will be back in action on Thursday, April 14, when they travel to Marathon for a meet that gets underway at 4:30 p.m.
