In a Facebook post, the Sheriff’s Office said the 19-year veteran’s retirement will be effective May 6.

The Sheriff’s Office said Walrath was hired by Sheriff Koth in July 2003 and served in the patrol division. In 2007, Sheriff Jaeger promoted him to patrol lieutenant and later reassigned him to the position of Jail Administrator in 2008.

In 2009, Walrath was promoted to Chief Deputy, a position he served in until his retirement.

“The position of Chief Deputy put Nate on the front lines with his staff, whom he enjoyed helping in any way he could,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “For the past two years, the idea of retirement has been looming in the background and realizing as each day passed just made it come closer and closer.”

The Sheriff’s Office noted that Walrath recently committed to a retirement date.

“Nate said there is a mix of joy and fear in this decision,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Joy that early retirement was not a myth, but actually a great benefit to law enforcement. The fear was stepping away from a job that he loved and enjoyed.”

Walrath plans to spend his retirement with his children and continuing to build his business in landscaping, the Sheriff’s Office said.
