Schmidt graduated from Nekoosa High School in 1997 and enlisted in the United States Army as a Calvary Scout, serving the majority of his enlistment in the Wisconsin National Guard. Schmidt attended classes at Mid-State Technical College and earned his degree in Criminal Justice before being called to active duty and deploying to Iraq for a one-year tour from 2005 to 2006.

Sheriff Jeff Jaeger hired Schmidt as a patrol deputy on April 16, 2007. The Sheriff’s Office said Schmidt was assigned various duties throughout his career, including serving as a field training officer, Vehicle Contact Instructor, EVOC instructor, NORDEG investigator, Special Response Team Member and eventually Special Response Team Leader.

Schmidt was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant in Dec. 2018.

“Andy says he plans on spending more quality time with family, playing his guitar and training his Belgian Malinois,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post, adding that Schmidt has aspirations to travel the country and hopes for an eventual trip to Europe.

“Thank you for your years of service to the citizens of Lincoln County and we wish you a happy retirement,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
